8 year old cries and throws tantrums every single day

My 8 year old step daughter cries and throws tantrums over everything. If she doesn't want to eat, tantrum. If she can't win a game, tantrum. Etc. Now she has started covering her ears when we try and talk to her when she is upset. Is this normal behavior? Please help!

She sounds very sensitive and has possible issues with coping with emotion and her environment.  Have you tried teaching her coping mechanisms or alternative behaviors?  For example, when she loses a game, you could role play what she CAN do or what she can't do.  When she is upset, give her self soothing or calming strategies.  (this includes deep breaths, counting to 10, opening and closing her fists, giving herself a hug, going to a cool down spot that no one an bother her in).  Is she a picky eater?  Have you ever looked into sensory integration disorder?

We have been teaching her to take deep breaths and she usually goes to a spot by herself when she gets upset. She is somewhat of a picky eater. She cries if she has to try something new that she thinks doesn't look good. We have not looked into sensory integration disorder. I'm just starting to research what this could be. I kind of thought she would outgrow it but it seems to be getting worse. Any info or experience you have on sensory integration disorder would be much appreciated! Thanks:)
