9 year old waking up terrified

My 9 year old son has been waking up terrified, shaking, increased heart rate, can't stay still, jumping up and down, screaming .  When you ask him what is wrong, he can't not explain it , nor does he want to talk about it.  He is fully awake , but crys and behaves like this for about an hour.  He says that something in his head is spinning , he can't explain it he says, it's too scary.  But can never make out what is so scary.  I am so concerned about this behavior.  It doesn't seem like night terrors or nightmares.  I am not sure what I should do, this happens almost every night for the past 2 months.  Should we take him to someone who he can talk to?

Please do take your son to the doctor for evaluation. Make sure he doesn't have enlarged tonsils and adenoids causing obstructive sleep apnea. It can cause waking in a panic with heart racing, and if a bad dream comes with it, it can be frightening. I don't know if the lack of oxygen could cause the head to feel it is spinning or not. also there are other sleep disorders where people describe of sense of inner vibration. If he's doing this every night, maybe a sleep study could give you more clues.

Sounds like Night Terrors to me, Me daughter is 8 and has had them since 2 years of age. Even when she appears awake she is NOT. Have you asked him questions the next day?? My daughter can carry on a garbled conversation following night terrors or sleep walking, but can't remember a thing the next day. Unless a full screaming outbreak has begun where she's running around screaming and carrying on and being disruptive to the rest of our family. Initially we didn't know what was going on so we thought she was just throwing a fit, she would come out of her room yelling at us, slamming doors and have NO recollection of it the next day. We limit the amount of television she watches before bed, computer time and what she eats before bet. we Read calming stories calming routine, and when she does have these night terrors, we walk with her back to her room speak calmly to her, lay down with her assure her everythings ok and she resumes a normal sleep in very little time. Good Luck until you find something that works for you, these bouts can be SO Frusterating.

The first place to start is always the family doctor.  Often what appears to be mental issues are, in reality,  physical issues.  Please take your son to the family doctor as soon as possible.  I  wish you the best ....
