My 12yo son is starting to ask questions

My son's father was abscent in his life for the first 9yrs. He had contact from letters and the odd phone call. He returned to the country when he was 9 and I have been very diligent at promoting the relationship...despite my view of my ex! They do have a relationship...more like mates though. he can't call him 'Dad' either cos he says it feels 'weird'
His stepdad has been in his life since he was almost 3.
As my son is getting older he's starting to notice behaviours in his father that he doesn't agree with and so asks me what I think. I'm careful with my responses but generally agree with my son as he is very intuitive.
He has also started asking me if he was ever nasty to me and wants some details... I'm not sure if I should tell him...ofcourse I wouldn't go into detail. I have acknowledged that we didn't get along and that he didn't treat me very well but I haven't given details.... what should I say?
