My daughter can be mean and impulsive, help!

Is there something wrong with my 7 year old daughter or is this behavior normal?  She is a perfect child at school according to her teachers, a very good student.  Yet when she interacts with her friends she is so mean.  She yells at them and is very critical of them.  She has a few good friends but she is very picky about who she plays with.  She also is very short tempered.  She can't stand to lose and will act out inappropriately when she does.  She can be physical when she is angry.  This doesn't seem right to me.  Any suggestions on what I can do to help her?  I feel like all of this is a self esteem issue and I am fearful her actions are going to alienate her from her peers.  Its painful to stand by and watch and not know what to do.

Have you tried talking to your daughter about why she is mean to her friends? or, about how to be a friend to the other children? As for being a "sore loser" when playing games - have you tried playing games with her and showing her how to win and lose graciously? Learning to be a friend or a good sport does not come naturally it is a learned behavior.

Unfortunately I can't help you but I do sympathise with you, I think I may have a similar problem with my child. Maybe it is not so unusual as I have heard how some other kids speak to each other. My fear is that it escalates to "Mean Girls" proportions when they reach teenage years.
