Please help with my thick 12 year old son..

by kimm1369, Dec 04, 2007 09:15AM
We have a 12 year old son.. He is taking Adderall (adderrall) for ADD and it seems to help with his concentration. However nothing matters to this child. He is in the 2 nine weeks at school and for the 3rd time we have just discovered he is not completing homework, classwork, or if he does it is failing to turn it in and then loses it as he is horribly disorganized. He seems to make everything so much harder on himself than it needs to be. He has been told he will do the work. And in the past he has had to make up the work as we told him he would. He has also acted out and had in school suspension, (shocked us as he has never acted out before to the degree he did). How do we help him? He may never see the light of day after he gets home from school today. It's no way to be a kid.

Please do not think I am being discourtious, (I am attempting to help you)
The facts really are, that discipline has to start at home.

You mention your sons A.D.D. but if you also realise that can also stand for Affection...Deliberation...DIscipline too.
It could be your helpful consideration Kimm, so why not try to apply it.

To teach respect, you must first show it

Regards UK Ray.

As a mom of a child with ADHD, I can sympathize.  Concentration is not the only part of the ADD/ADHD problem.  So, if the adderall (adderrall) isn't helping anything but the concentration, maybe you should speak to his doctor about something else?  There are MANY different meds out there for ADD/ADHD.  Talk to your doctor is the best advice anyone could give you.  Good luck!!!

We have a very structured, disciplined home due to his need for this.. Thank you for your help.. Sometimes it feels like we like we remind or ride him so hard but if we didn't he would not survive.. Today I chased him down at the bus stop cause he left his homework on the table.. How do we help him without it looking like we are doing everything for him.. How do we get him to start doing or making an effort on his end.. He is 12 and only going to get older.. Thank you all again for your help..
