Why does my child tell me he doesnt know how to listen?

My son just turned 6 and for the past year has had a difficult time at school as far as his behavior. Hitting other kids, not listening to teachers, although his academics is on point, he has to be told numerous times to do his work. And at home he never does anything for himself like getting dressed, putting on shoes or brushing his teeth. He just does not listen. I have taken EVERYTHING away as punishment, spanking, timeout nothing works. There are some days that are GREAT at school but very rarely. He is on the edge of getting kicked out of school. I thought because he goes to public school the teachers just dont have to time or patience for him with 18 other kids in his class he needs more attention but what about at home its just me, dad and him. What can I do?

cramerlady,  if he's being removed from a regular public school,  his behavior is EXTREME.   If he were being kicked out of a private school,  or a magnet public school that you have to be accepted to get in,  

Having to be told numerous times to do work is pretty standard for a first grade boy,  and isn't a reason to remove him from the school.

During this process, has he been evaluated by the school or a private psychologist to find out what is going on,  or get a diagnosis?

The majority of your post describes pretty average behavior that schools very willingly work with,  and are not the cause of his being removed.

You do mention hitting.  Is this pretty constant,  and dangerous?

I think you need to focus your attention on what it is the school is about to remove him for,  and let the lack of attention and follow through go for the time being,  because those aren't important right now.
