I am a teacher and I would saw 12 is a good age to give the talk as many start as early as 13... I know it is hard to believe but it is the sad truth... talk more about responsibility and consequences than the act.   Believe me he IS talking about it with his friends.. and finding out all sorts of bad info

I would start now.  It is best to have very open lines of communication with this subject.  Give the facts.  You may not think he knows, but I'm sure he has heard about most things and just doesn't quite understand.  The more he knows the better off he is.  Make sure he knows the actual consequences and ramifications from doing things too soon.  Having an ackward talk about sex is much better than the talk about his pregnant girlfriend.
