How can stepdad's handle sensitive only child son

by Terry37, Jan 07, 2009 09:39PM
I have a step son who is 13 and I was going to get something in the kitchen and he knew i was going to get it b/c he reached for it. I at first grabbed his had to move it and get the object. He did not say that he was kidding and the lights were dim so i did not see his exspression. It was a piece of bread. I thought about spliting it w/ him.  Anyways he grabbed my throat and I thought he was serious so I grabbed his and we wrestled a about 15 seconds and stopped. he bumped his head. Anyways I realize that I was wrong (????) and that I should have thought before I acted and I appologized. Then he went home and told his mom who was very upset w/ me.  She thinks she has two children instead of a Husband and a son.       Please Advise.             Also do you have any tips for a stepdad who had older brothers and now has a very sensitive step son.  Thanks.

First of all, if the kid grabbed your throat, you shouldn't have grabbed his.  That was legitimizing what he was doing, because you did it.  You should have just removed his hand from your throat and explained that he shouldn't do that.  The mother probably has a right to be slightly irked about it.

A "sensitive" step son?  What exactly do you mean by that?
