13 year old monster

My son can be quite the monster. When he goes back into boy-mode, he's a very charming,
polite, intelligent person.

Anyway, he gets very out of control and screams at me. He'll actually say shut up and such.
Yesterday I got in his face, grab his mouth, squeezed, and said, "You may not speak to me like
that."
I got, "what happened to the no hitting the kid policy? HUH? HUH?"
I ignored him and gave him a time limit if he wanted to join us for Thanksgiving (which he did)
and he was fine and dandy after that.

I agree - no hitting kids. But geez - sometimes I feel as though he is SO disrespectful. Yes, we've taken things away, grounding ,etc. I'm talking about - what do you do AT THAT MOMENT?

You try to breathe, count to ten and walk away if you have to.  They can be so infuriating I agree but it is worse when you not only have an out of control teenager but you also have an out of control parent.  We must model the behaviour we want them to copy.  

It is a horrible feeling isn't it when you can not control a teenager, you feel so helpless but usually their emotional outbursts pass quickly.  Try to talk to him about it later and get him to apologise and see what he is doing is disrespectful.  I'm not sure what else you can do that you aren't already doing.  They usually mature eventually and stop the outbursts.

Did my son move in with you?  My 13 yr old Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde is exactly the same way.  Plus he now towers over me.  Having a 15 yr old, I know it will pass (the 15 yr old isnt nearly as moody now as he used to be!)  The hormones are raging and your son is a pain in the butt, but it will get better.  Watch how you react and choose your battles!

Thanks. You're right. I do react poorly sometimes. Walking away doesn't help because he always chases after me. I can try to lock my door, he bangs on it.
Right now, he's a peacefull and sweet as a baby doe. I know the Jekyll/Hyde thing! :)
