19m Old Suddenly Cannot Walk

Friday my 19m old son stopped walking. At first he was crawling and standing, then only standing and then nothing at all. I called the Dr Friday night and she advised that I should take him to the ER to be checked out. I did that; X-Rays and blood tests were negative. They only thing they found was that his white blood cell count was slightly elevated (15 and should be under 14). Since Friday there has been no change in him. He tries to walk and stand and cannot. He took a couple steps Saturday night and he struggld to do that. His legs were shaking. He has a follow appt tomorrow with his pediatrician. His only medical history is that he was 5 weeks early (he's a twin) and was born with cleft lip and palate.
Has anyone else experienced a similar situation?

Small children starting to walk often do stop and start I have seen this, what did his pediatrician say ?

He is not just starting to walk, he has been walking for over 6 months. His pediatrician thinks it is toxic synovitis- a virus that attacks the hips. Apprently it is very common in boys. If there is no change in him by Thursday she wants to send him for a bone scan.
