3 yr old refused to potty train

My son turned three at the end of July and we have been trying to potty train him since he was two and a half. He never was potty trained at night, but most days he would stay dry. Lately, though, he refuses to use the potty at all. He will go hide and pee in his underwear then come tell me he did it and he needs changed. I think it's just a control thing, 'mommy can't make him go' as I know he can and did use the potty for a long time by himself. Any suggestions?

I'd make him sit in his wet undies for a while. If he doesn't like the feeling of being wet he might not do it anymore. You could also try keeping a stack of books near the potty for him to the read. My daughter enjoys that. Also offer him incentives to use the potty, I think candy works the best. Good luck

Thank you so much for your response. We have tried positive and negative reinforcement, and neither seem to be doing the trick. He doesn't mind sitting in wet underwear, it bothers me more than him. =) He's very smart for his age, can already count to thirty, knows his abc's and can recognize shapes, letters, and numbers. I am hoping it is just a rebellion thing, but I am 11w4d prego and would like him completely off the diapers by the time the new baby arrives.
