4 year old is still peeing on himself! HELP

by Confused1030, Sep 20, 2009 09:26AM
Hello, I introduced the potty to my son at the age of 12 months once he started walking. I am starting to wonder if this plays a part in this. But he goes to the potty sometimes like for at least a good 3 to 4 weeks in a row just fine with the exceptions of night time pull ups. He will most times have a dry pull up in the mornings. However, when he is at the day care or here at home and is entertained by his daily activities he will proceed to go in his underwear. I have tried all the take aways such as taking the TV away, taking the toys away, not giving him his snacks. I don't do the buying the toys because I don't want him to expect that he is supposed to get a toy everytime he goes to the store just because he went to the potty two minutes ago. I want him to understand that this is the way of life as he does with everything else. I talk to him and tell him that he is a big boy now and that big boys go to the potty like Daddy and so on. He is very intelligent and can hold a pretty good conversation. I just don't understand why he can't or want just say I have to go to the potty or he will wait until the last minute. I am  lost I need some help. Should I take him to the doctor to be tested for bladder issues I just don't want to be missing something that could be serious? PLEASE HELP!

hi,im were having problems with my 4 yr old step-grandson and what i have thought of doing with him is taking him to the toilet every hour so he learns and hopefully will get fed up of been made to go to the loo so frequently??
Ive noticed on this site that the toileting issues such as u and i are ignored and i wrote on here yesterday and have had no reply which i found annoying as you sound as frustrated as me with regards to the toileting probs.
So i sat and thought of what ive wrote in the above to you & hope it works for us both??
Take Care,good luck xx

I don't think punishing him by taking away toys and TV is going to help. My son is 3 1/2 and REFUSED to use the potty until a few months ago. The more of a big deal I made out of it, the more he refused. When I relaxed, so did he and now he is completely trained, day and night. Some children develop potty training later than others and need more time and understanding. There are no 'tricks' to it, this is one thing that is basically up to the child to learn. If you think it may be a physical or mental problem, then I would seek a doctors advice. Good luck to you and to janine68.
