Chicken Pox or Flea Bites????

by AlessandrasMom, Jun 26, 2008 09:55AM
Hello,
I have a one year old daughter and last night after taking a walk I noticed "spots" on her.  My husband said they are chicken pox so I called the nurse and she said they sounded like chicken pox but the doctor wouldn't see her because if it is chicken pox, they didn't want to infect anybody else in the doctor's office.
My babysitter just called and says she thinks they are flea bites.  The spots are red, blister-ish, on her back, shoulders, arms, and legs and back of her neck now.  Probably about 14 in all.  There are not any on her chest.  I've been trying to read all I can on the internet all morning and flea bites tend to be more in the "folds" or "creases" of the skin and these are not.  I did find a doctor who will see her tomorrow, but right now I'm going nuts trying to figure out what this is.
Anybody have any ideas?  I know it's hard not seeing what the spots actually look like.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Michelle

Flea bites don't tend to be in folds or creases - they tend to be on legs.  In a child that small though,  the fleas might be jumping up higher than her legs.

Why does the babysitter think it's flea bites?  I her house flea ridden?

One year old is pretty young to get chicken pox.  She should still have immunities from you.   Is she cranky,  feverish and irritable, and are more and more spots showing up on her?

Hello,
I took my daughter to the E.R. Thursday night and they confirmed it was the chicken pox.  She has a mild case, not even 20 spots on her.  As far as the flea bites, the babysitter was at my house and because we have 2 dogs and a cat, she just assumed that's what they were.  We treat our animals very regularly for fleas, ticks, etc.  You know how it is when you have a child, everybody thinks they know better!  And yes, because she is this young with such a mild case, the doc says she may get them again in the future.
She is a little feverish, cranky, and not sleeping too much.  She is now really congested which the doctor said we really had to watch because I guess when they are that young with the pox, they have a good chance of getting pheumonia (sp?).
I really appreciate you responding back to me.
Have a great day!

I'm glad they were able to confirm it!

It's not the greatest thing, but at least it puts your mind at ease!

Poor bebe, i hope she gets better soon!

I'm having teh same issue with my 2 yr old, except these spots were on her last summer also same time, lasts about 2 or 3 months. They are on her legs, her upper back and the back of her neck, My moms house has fleas in it but not bad at all. They are still trying to fit them off. No one else is having these spots, and everyone is assuming they are flea bites, but I'm not sure.
