HELP!!! my 2yr old has yet to sleep thru the night

by mommyofacasteel, Oct 28, 2009 10:46AM
My son will be 2yrs. in December. He hasn't ever slept fully thru an entire nigt. His doctor is well aware of the problem but stated that the only medicine that he could give our son was an adult blood pressure medicine that sometimes has a sleepy side effect. he also suggested that our son may have slight insomnia. My boyfriend and I were not comfortable with giving him this medicine so we have been unsuccessfully trying every single sleep program that we can find. Nothing has worked for him. We recenlty had to take him out of his crib b/c he kept climbing out of it and would bump hit head. (that's never helps with putting him back down) so we went and got him a toddlers bed. we tried a gate @ the door but he clinbs up over that and just throws himself on the floor. This whole situation has put a horrible damper on my boyfriends (my son's father) and I's relationship. we trade nights to get up but during the week only getting sleep everyother night is just not working. We are so sleep deprived that we have been just letting him sleep with us in bed. But this doesn't help either. He still wakes up when he is sleeping with us. I don't mean just one time a night it is every 2 hours. He takes one nap a day for 1-2hours and doesn't seem that the lack of sleep bothers him. Please let me know anything that I can do for this. I am in desperate need of sleep.

I would start by cutting out the naps completely. He will be crabby for awhile, but my son quit taking naps at 18 months and is now 3 and sleeps 11-12 hours a night. A strict sleeping schedule may help too so that your son will know it's time to go to bed. No food or drink close to bedtime and no active play either, both of these things will keep him awake. Good luck to you and I hope you all get some good sleep soon. :)

I say also cut the naps. My son use to be the exact same way. I cut his nap and put him to bed at 9 or 930. He just started sleeping thru the nite and this is the only way I could get him to not wake up. He will still wake up atleast one time. He usually wants a sippy cup. My son has acid reflux and allergies. So the combo of meds for these and keeping him up is the only thing that has worked also keep all lights off.
