My 17 month has an arm-pit temp of 100.4. Should i take him to the hospital or wait it out?? How off is that way of reading a temp?

100.4 is not in the danger zone.  I would wait it out.  One time my daughter about 2 yrs at the time, had a temp of 104 and I completely freaked out, called her ped on call and they said if it got to 104.5 to take her in to the hospital, but 104 was not that dangerous.  What?  I was so shocked, so I looked it up in my baby book, and sure enough he was right.  Keep an eye on him.

I always heard add 1 degree to the arm pit temp.

Yes, you're right, add a degree.
