Is it normal behavior for a 4 yr to kill her goldfish

Is it normal behavior for a 4 year old to take her fish out of the bowl and watch them die?

Did this child at four years of age understand the significance of removing the fish from the water?  It is possible that she/he only wanted to "play" with the fish but did not comprehend that the fish requires water in order to breathe.  Just an opinion ...

She told her Mom that she was watching the fish gulp for air and even made the gulping sound.  I do think she comprehends (as much as  4 year old can).  She also can be extremely mean to her dog and cat - pushing their eyeballs in to make them yelp.

Perhaps it might be wise to post on the "Ask a Doctor" - child behavior site for professional advice.  It does appear there is more here than just "misunderstanding".

does she seem to enjoy hurting the animals?  if so it may be a good idea to rehome the pets as to prevent their untimely demise.
