Possible Ear Infection

by yelloweskimo, Nov 05, 2009 06:07PM
Hello everyone,
I know my daughter is not technically in this category but I was wondering whether anyone could help. She is nearly 10 months old and has a doctor's appointment today but I would like to hear some thoughts. I think she has an ear infection, she has had a cold for the last few days but has been sleeping ok. Then last night she woke up every 20 minutes screaming, she was ok when she had her pacifier but as soon as that came out she was in pain again. She felt really hot too. She finally settled in our room and slept ok but was quite restless in her sleep. Today she seems ok, a little grumpy but doesn't seem to be in pain at all. She did throw up this morning too, and she rarely throws up. These signs tell me that it's an ear infection, but maybe I'm wrong and it's something else. I know a lot of mums out there have had their poor little one deal with an ear infection so I would just like to hear whether I am on the right track. Thanks for your help!

were her eye tear ducts matted when she woke  this morning or after nap?

That was always a sign to me that my boy had ear infection-

So I am sure the dr told you whether or not there was ear infection but that was always a way I could tell.

Yes, you describe an ear infection.  Sometimes my kids had fevers and sometimes they didn't.  But anytime a child under one has a fever of 100.5, you should consult your doctor.  Give your baby tylenol (baby formula) to ease the pain and fever and never wait to do that.  I did that once as we were on our way to the doctor's anyway and I wanted them to take my son's temp.  They scolded me for leaving my child without tylenol as it is more important to make the baby comfortable.  Also, prop the baby bed up on one end where baby's head rests so that draining goes better.  Good luck and welcome to the world of ear infections.  Isn't it fun, ha ha.  By the way, my kids sometimes got them when they were teething too.  And now that they are 4 and 5 they will often have a cough with it too.  Good luck.

Thanks very much for your inputs....I was right, the doctor confirmed an ear infection today. It's early though so the antibiotics should clear it up quickly. I didn't check her tear ducts this morning, but I know to do that in the future. I was starting to worry that it may have just been teething problems, but I am glad I went with my instincts and just went to the doctor. My partner was sure she was just in pain from teething. I did give her baby panadol (australian equivalent of tylenol) last night, I always have it on hand just in case! Poor little thing, I personally have never experienced an ear infection (not one I can remember), but I have heard they are really painful. Thank you both for your help.
