Talking/speech....anyone/ mom with some ideas

by mamus, Jul 20, 2008 05:39AM
Can anyone tell me something about my four year son's speech. His speech is not clear, some are but many aren't. He is still using mostly single words, and some two three words phrases, far from pronouns, not retelling stories/events. On the plus side, he says his colors, shapes, alphabets, numbers 1-20, and will write/draw them, also writing some basic words, he is interested in playing with others, he makes eye contact, likes to be tickled, engages in play with dolls, animals, where I see he talks a lot, but still not clear.
He was toilet trained but has fallen back so badly after I took him to a new daycare, just took him out of there after some situation.
I already have/had him is speech, once a week, but it is difficult since the insurance won't pay. I have been working with him, since I am a teacher, but high school teacher not preschool. He is an only child, and I am a single mom. There are no kids around when I am home.
When I hear other kids his age speak, I feel that he is far behind. He loves books but want to go through it on his own, and not allow me to read to him as much as I want to. He handles books well- hold them appropriately, and go through each pages talking while pinting to pictures, but still not very clear. He will carrry his books around and sometimes sleep with them, wakes up carrying them.

It sounds as if he needs Speech therapy, if you can afford some of it,you wre right to take him from Daycare as if he fell back with the Toilet training.maybe he wasnt being attended to there. Have you met up with other Moms and can get your child and theirs together after school or weekends, how about a Swop you have their child then you reciprocate. The Book reading is very good ,he sounds like a really nice boy,try to  get him to let you read more as he will hear you talk, say to him 'you read for 5mins then I will read for 5 mins as I love to read also.'As you work is he at a new Daycare? amybe they could help with Class reading also.

Have you talked to you pediatrician about it.....His speech therapist didn't tell anything about him...My son was involved with early intervention so they evaluated him...He just was just seen by a neurologist...He got the diagnose of apraxia....His speech teacher said I should see one for a diagnose for more therapy....To me you son sounds good...But if you feel he should be speaking more then I suggest seeing your pediatrian...best of luck

I have a 4 yr old daughter that is in Speech Theraphy.I noticed when she was around 3 ,she wasnt speaking like she should, and her Doctor sent her to Speech. She has been in Speech over a year now,and i have seen MAJOR improvement in her..Have you had your childs hearing tested??
Im asking b/c ,my daughter has had 32 ear infections and has hearing loss in both ears..And that has led to the speech problem...Feel free to contact me......
