my little guys

well my guys are 14 1/2 months old twins have been unusual lately. i'm not sure it's them entering terrible twos or what but it's pushing their father and i to the edge. they're whiny...all the time. there is not a moment when they're not whining. they scream, kick, smack, punch, bite and fight with each other constantly. i know it's normal for a toddler to not listen but these two seem to be absolutely defiant. time outs, hand smacks, stern no's...nothing is working. i'm at my wits end. BUT if they're separated they're angles! if one wakes up before another does it's like a completely different child. they're calm, quiet, play and are just perfect little boys. when they're together they're hellions! is it just that age? or is there something we can do to get our sweet babies back?

oh and i forgot to add that occasionally they wake up screaming and crying in the middle of the night. it's an absolutely heart wrenching scream (i'm guessing a nightmare) that sends us running up to their room. thing is we can't figure out why they would be having nightmares. they don't watch anything scary on tv and dh and i do not fight in front of them. ever. what could be causing the middle of the night terrors?
