speech delay

by roni21, Mar 11, 2008 10:08AM
Hi! My son is 4 yrs old and just today i got a report from his school saying that he has a speech development problem and that he is speaking like a 2 1/2 yr old. But the very same day my son comes to me and tells me . "PLEASE DANCE PROPERLY, I WANT TO SEE".
He is not a talkative boy but he understands what is said and responses to it. The only thing is that he is not talking fluently. Please tell me what i Have to do about this. Does my son need any special help?

Does the school offer speech therapy or is there a speech pathologist on staff?  If so, be sure to take advantage of the extra services.  Often communities will offer speech services to young children at little or no cost (depends where you live) so you might ask your school or family doctor is such services exist.  Good luck ..

If you doubt the school's report, you can request further evaluation.  Having a speech impairment is not uncommon for a child his age, but without intervention it can lead to difficulties in learning to read and write.  If his teachers and the school speech-language pathologist reccommend intervention, I would go ahead with it!  The earlier the intervention, the better the outcome.
