Enlargement of the surrounding tissue of a lesion in the thalamus.

I have a small lesion in the right lateral ventricle of the thalamus.  The lesion has had a stable appearance for several years but now there is a mild asymmetric enlargement of the right lateral ventricle surrounding the lesion.  Why is there enlargement of the surrounding tissue when the lesion has not changed in size?
