Parkinson's and breathing difficulty

by jc49, Jan 26, 2008 10:37PM
My Mother was diagnosed with Parkinson's about 12 years ago.  She has the common symptoms of tremors, freezing, depression, etc. but recently she has been having a very difficult time with breathing.  The symptoms started out resembling anxiety attacks where she would have problems breathing, always during the middle part of the day.  The doctors treated it as if it was anxiety but it has continued to get worse.  She now has the problem every day and it lasts for a longer period of time.  She has been tested for her oxygen absorption and that is not the problem.  I think it has something to do with her Parkinson's.  Could that be possible and if so, can the symptom be treated?  I would be very grateful for any information someone may have.

have you looked into med side affects will happen

I have a patient that I take care of in a sub acute facility.  She is on a respirator and recently started having episodes where she has difficulty breathing.  Her breathing is around 40 breaths a minute and she becomes cool and clammy.  When it first happened we thought she was actively dying and obtained an order for morphine to maintain her breathing at or lower than 28 breaths a minute She had 2 mg morphine sub lingually and it didn't touch her.  She came out of the episode on her own.  She has these episodes every few days.  The last time she had a lot of bloody secretions.  I did look up the side effects of her medications and difficulty breathing and GI bleeding are two of them.  My patient is a Do Not Hospitalize and Do Not Resuscitate.  I am not getting much support from the medical doctor or nursing supervisors.  I have asked the patient's husband to call the patient's neurologist.  Even though he is not treating her in our facility maybe he can be of assistance.  Does anyone else have any suggestions.
