Parkinsons and heart bypass

by Sara90, Oct 08, 2009 04:59AM
My 79 year old mom just had a quadruple  heart bypass(10 days ago).  When she entered the hospital she was immediately diagnosed with Parkinsons and they started treating that with medication about a week before the surgery.  She came out of surgery o.K. but is having breathing problems which I hear is common.  Yesterday they put in a feeding tube because of swallowing difficulties.  In researching this on the net I learned that this is a feature of Parkinsons and the danger is in food entering the airway.  What I don't understand is how the bypass could have contributed to this as she had no difiiculties before the surgery.  Also she has been eating well since the surgery but couldn't swallow liquids.  This doesn't make sense to me!  Please excuse the vague description.....I live in Israel and my parents are in U.S.  The only info I get is from my 80 year old father and there is no one else for me to talk to.

I am sorry that you are unable to be by your mothers side. That does not sound like your getting the whole story. I would ask your father to to speak to the doctor giving his permission to have you call and speak directly with the doctor. I wish you all the best.
