thumb tremor...

by rachelsma, Mar 10, 2009 06:53PM
Hi,

A couple of months ago my left thumb and index finger started twitching at resting position. The tremors lasted about 3 days and then stopped. Since then I've felt what can only be described as internal tremor in the same thumb. The thumb also seems heavy. Does anyone know what this might be related to? Many thanks!

Hi!  Don't all the weird things in our bodies give us the creeps some times?  Speaking of which, I've read that such symptoms can be caused by parasites from within, as in under the skin, deep in the tissues.  Ugh.  What you've felt could be a symptom of PD, but could come from a pinched nerve, a vitamin and/or mineral deficiency, an allergy, or a parasite---and maybe other things, too.  Read as much as you can regarding any condition it might fall under.  Check out the library, the health food store, and the Internet.  Investigate oil pulling/swishing on the web, especially the info on www.curezone.com, as well as googling it.  The more you learn, the less agitation you have about the unknown.  Jot down anything that you're experiencing that might be a symptom, and keep a journal: foods, meds (including over the counter), sleep, bathroom trips.  Do you see any patterns?  All such info will be helpful when you have your medical appt to try to get to the bottom of it.  My holistic doctor is 83 and has had Parkinson's for over 30 years.  In the last several months, his walking indicates Parkinsons, but he's done an absolutely fantastic job of keeping the disease at bay by utilizing every protocol that might help, including, but not limited to, chelation, vitamin/mineral IV's, a "clean" diet, oral vit-min-herbs, and pure water.  The reason he turned to alternative health was that the medical establishment, of which he was an enthusiastic part, could give him no truly long term hope.  He actually practices what he preaches!  And he's such a joy to be around!  Try twirling your hands around real fast, as though they're props on a helicopter, several times a day.  If they begin to feel more alive, maybe it's a pinched nerve.  Hope some of these suggestions might help.  Keep us posted!

In  the absence of other symptoms, I would suggest that you have a compression of your median nerve. Do you have any sensory changes? Does your thumb/index finger feel cooler than the contralateral side? any pins and needles?
Compression neuropathies can occur at the cervical spine(neck) ,around the elbow region and at the wrist. Watch the patterning of your symptoms...do you feel it all the time? what makes your symptoms worse? better? how do you use your upper extremity each day in terms of work? daily activities?
Consulting a physiatrist( doctor of physical med and rehabilitation), orthopeadic or certified hand therapist might be the way to go.
