My daughter at 5 1/2 had body odor. She is now 6yrs old and has pubic hair and breast tenderness. She is just under 4 feet and weighs 46 pounds all the info I find on the computer talks about girls that are chubby or over weight. What does this mean for us? Could it be something different than early puberty? We just had blood work done today and we are waiting to hear from our Doctor.
The body odor and pubic hair are what we call adrenarche. The last layer of the adrenal gland matures anywhere from age 4 up to age 7 and some kids will show signs of these normal but very annoying male hormones by having hair change and sweat change.
the breast development though is concerning, this is female hormones and sometimes if the adrenal gland development is robust and this influences the pituitary then the maturation process may lead to early puberty that we know of. Weight is a big big factor, this can lead to excessive insulin levels and stimulate the body to "thrive". However even thin girls can have early puberty.
She needs to see a pediatric endocrinologist, they can do labs and assess her bone age which is an xray to assess maturity and also decide if testing is needed to get some more answers.
