enlarged thyroid surrounded by multiple masses

My 11 year old granddaughter has an "enlarged thyroid with multiple masses around it" according to the Dr and a scan report - what is it? we are waiting for an appt with a Pediatric endo - should we be in a great hurry? the report came bck Friday (May 22, 2009)
