Hurting Heart

My daughter at least daily says her heart pounds once followed by a burning pain. Is this cause for concern?

Dear DMSL,

Without evaluating your daughter, I cannot say exactly what is going on here.  Typically, burning pain is not associated with cardiac disease.  However, the heart pounding may be a sign of an abnormal heart rhythm, or it may be a normal response to something else going on.  She should be evaluated by her primary care provider to obtain much more of a history.  If your primary care provider feels that there is a cardiac problem, your daughter can be referred for further pediatric cardiac evaluation.
