10m2wk baby with Esotropia has serious problems in his white matter

He's had crossed eyes from birth, and at first we believed it would go away (our doctor said so). But when they didn't at 6 months, we took him to an eye doctor, and she said it was possibly his optic nerve or something. Recently she made us get him an MRI, and we finally got the report today -

---

Indications: ESOTROPIA

Technique: MRI of the brain was performed prior to and following the administration of IV Dotarem contrast.

Findings: There is fairly extensive T2/FLAIR signal abnormality in the periventricular white matter. There is associated white matter volume loss with mild ex-vacuo dilatation of the atria of the lateral ventricles and thinning of the corpus caliosum. No acute infarct, no intracranial hemorrhage. Ventricles and subarachnoid spaces are normal. No extra axial fluid collection. Posterior fossa normal. Pituitary gland normal. No parenchymal or leptomeningeal enhancement. Circle of Willis flow voids preserved. Visualized paranasal sinuses and mastoid vessels are clear. BFFE images through the orbits normal, with normal optic nerves, optic chiasm, and proximal optic tract. Visualized cranial nerves are normal in appearance.

---

When the eye doctor saw the report she said that this wasn't her field, and that she can't help, and referred us to our local children's hospital. But we've already been trying to get in there for a while now, and there aren't any openings for at least two more months.
In the mean time, can anyone help diagnose what's wrong? We're very very worried; some cursory research online gave us some very scary possibilities and we (obviously) don't want to assume anything. Please feel free to ask any further questions and I'll try to respond immediately.
