3 yr old granddaughter with recurrent headaches.

Hi,

My 3yr old granddaughter has been having recurrent headaches. She also complains of her stomache, legs and arms hurting. She complains of this everyday, and at night (in the middle of the night) she will wake up with high fevers 102/104. She has also had a hacking cough, we have taken her to her pediatrician who says everything is okay after she had chest xray that was negative. I'm really starting to get worried....

There have been many children sick with the same in the last year or so , also adults , the symptoms have been , cough, some fever especially at night irritated and maybe sore throat, fatigue, aches and pains, something it goes away only to return. Many people in my neighbourhoods have this .I do believe its environmental or a virus....Doctors find nothing .the nearest is severe allergy symptoms . All we can do is make them comfortable and soothe them .and hope it passes .may be good to some research .

Hi there.  Well, there are a lot of viruses going on these days.  With a fever of that type, I'd guess a virus or an infection OR something called 'periotic fever syndrome'.

How long has this been going on?  Is it more than a couple of weeks?  Viruses can last 7 to 14 days but you also have to be on the look out for a 'secondary infection'.  That would include sinus infections (with the headache and cough and fever, that is what I'd be worried about), ear infections, bronchitis and pnemonia (pneumonia).

I'd honestly give it a couple of days and then take her right back to the doctor.  I'd think they'd prescribe a round of antibiotics for her and if they already did, move to a stronger one or different class.

It is so hard when our little ones are ill isn't it!!  Take her back to the doctor if she is not feeling better in a couple of days.  good luck

Oh, and I also wanted to mention a couple of other 'comfort' items.  You may use one but I thought I'd mention how helpful a humidifer can be at night.  We use a WARM mist one.  Also double the fluid if possible with her as you want to make sure she keeps hydrated with the fevers AND the added benefit of thining the mucus so it stays 'moving'.

good luck and hope she feels better soon!
