4 year old with vaginal itching

My 4 year old daughter finished 10 days of Amoxicillin for an ear infection.  The following evening she started intensely itching her vaginal area (which is red but she doesn't have any discharge or odor).  I assumed it was a yeast infection due to the antibiotics.   So, the following morning (Saturday) I called the pediatrician.  To my surprise, they told me to use bacitracin topically and to call back on Monday if it hadn't stopped.  I had never heard of using bacitracin for vaginal itching, even if it's not a yeast infection.   Is this typical treatment?  I'm not really comfortable with this.   Should I insist that she be seen by the pediatrician?  Can I just use a monistat cream on her?   Please help!

Well, I took her to the doctor today.  She definitely has a yeast infection.  The pediatrician prescribed Nystatin cream to be applied 4 to 5 times a day.  I feel bad that she had to suffer for three days before she was given the cream but at least she has it now.    Both my kids have sensitive skin so we use dye and fragrant free soap, so I don't think that contributed at all.    Thanks again for all your advice.

Thank you all for your input!   I have been using the bacitracin cream since yesterday afternoon.   She says it feels better, but she is still scratching like crazy.  She eats yogurt just about every day and doesn't take baths (my older daughter has chronic uti so we shower only). Since she is still scratching so much, I'm going to call the pediatrician back tomorrow morning so I can bring her in just to be checked.

this is normal when my daughter gets a bladder infrectin they always give her bactrim and make sure you put tons or cream on it and dont let her take a bath give her a shower.. if at all possiable. that way what may be down there does no spread.. if she will ear yogurt it is good for it to.. it has live bactira in it that fight off bad backtria. which i know dont make much sence but that is what my doc. told me and my daughter has been haven uti and bladder infections since she was 4 months old.. so i hope this info will help you in some way..

I understand if you are not comfrontable with using the cream, but I do work in an Urgent Care and we have little girls as young as a few months old, however when I child is at least three years old we do recommend using either an perscription or the bacitracin.  It may be unfronfrontable to but on your daughter, but she will feel better soon.  If you still not sure then that your daughter to a rapid care or an urgent care if you can not get her to see her pediatrician.  I hope everything works out for you and your little one.  Besides I understand, I have 3 daughters who are now 10, 11, and 12 years old, a 3 year old son, and 1 on the way.

Apparently it works okay and doctors do say you can use it, anti biotics often cause a yeast infection, if in doubt speak to your Doctor and verify its okay to use .
