5 month old female with a heart murmur
My 5 month old daughter was recently diagnosed with a heart murmur. They found it while she was under for surgery. She also has allergies to everything. Is this potentially an inocent murmur? Or is there a chance it is something bad? We have been refered to a pediatric cardiologist, but I am trying to research it so I am prepared.
I am so sorry but I see that you are very hopeful and this will help you get through, when does she get the surgery have they given a date yet. Miracles happen all the time heart surgery has come a long way , we will be praying and thinking about her, may I ask her name ?
My baby is now turning 4 months old this September and i was told by our doctor that she has three holes in her heart one outside and two inside the heart. She should be healthy and no infection whatsoever for us to wait till she's 2 years old to have /perform open heart surgery. If in any case she is not healthy now, the surgery will took place as soon as possible.
My baby has VSD and ASD... I'm really afraid... she's still a baby. I know God is good, my husband and I always pray that a miracle should happen.

My DS is almost 4 and was diagnosed at a 1 year with a murmur. His ped at the time automatically considered it innocent since he wasn't born with it. He said it was nothing to worry about. However, when we moved to a new town when DS was 2, the new ped. advised getting a heart echo done. I was a nervous wreck. I worried about everything. It turned out to be nothing to worry about and they he will probably out grow it. I am relieved that we had the echo so I know for sure that his heart is ok.

My 20 month old's murmur was also discovered 2 days after he was born. He had a VSD and an ASD (upper chamber Septal defect). They told us that the ASD (about the size of a dime) would never correct itself and he would need surgery. His VSD is in the membrane but had a flap that they hoped would correct itself.
We went back to the pediatric cardiologist and the ASD went from 8 cm to 3 cm. they had no explanation for this but with that good news i didn't ask for one. However his VSD has not changed and they are watching his heart for enlargement. He will need to have surgery at some point down the road. We are in a wait and see mode for now. You would never know there was anything wrong with him if you saw him out running and playing! I am lucky enough to have the leading pediatric cardiology hospitals in the nation.
At this point in time I am more concerned with his constant coughing, sinus infection and ear infections (he has tubes). They just tested his immune system to see if this is the cause. Found out that his Mannose Binding Protein is low, whatever that means. They are retesting and we will find out next week. All they told me was that it is his immune system and could explain the constant illness'.

Just to maybe help ease your mind, both of my kids (5 months, 5 years) were born with heart murmurs, specifically one called a Ventrical Septal Defect. It is a small hole in the heart (our kids' holes were in the muscle) and it can close on its own or surgery will be performed to close it.
Thank god, our childrens were small enough to close on their own.
It seems like it is a good thing that it had never been discovered except by sight, it seems like that
would indicate it wasnt very severe. A heart murmur that is discovered by a doctor listening to the baby's breathing is a very distinct sound, it is an added "whooshing" noise in addition to the
sound of a normal heartbeat. The absence of hearing that seems like it would indicate that it is
very small. Also, the kids with the bigger murmurs usually have trouble growing as fast too, which is an indicator to the Dr. Also, I know the ones that are in the muscle will never grow bigger than what they are.
We had to go to a pediatric cardiologist with both kids, and it is very scary because the thought of something being wrong with your baby's heart is gut-wrenching, but it really is harmless.

a murmur can be anything from something simple and harmless to something very serious. You will know more during your cardiologist visit. It is a painless appointment, my daughter goes routinely to deal with her heart defect that first presented itself as a murmur. My daughters is serious and will require corrective surgery. I also have a murmur, but mine is harmless. It really just depends.
