5 year old with sudden lower Facial Tic

I have an almost 5 year old boy who suddenly developed a facial tic around the mouth and neck.  One morning he was without any tics, dropped him off at daycare and he cried for the first time in years.  When I picked him up I had to take him to a friends house because I had to work.  I later found out they noticed the tic.  The next day I dropped him off and he cried again, said he just misses me and went into class fine.  I then had to pick him up to go to jk orientation.  This is when I first noticed the tic.  He draws out the corner of his mouth and quickly inhales.  I thought he was having trouble breathing. I took him to the pediatrician who said that facial tics happen due to stress and to try to ignore it.  I am concerned that there is a larger underlying issue.  How long should we ignore it?  When he is busy with his friends playing or playing with us he does not tic.

Is he on any meds as this is sometimes a side effect , I have also heard it can happen on a temporary basis due to stressful situations, would there be any problem at school does he get on okay with the teachers/children ,what about the friends house, has the friend got a child how does your son get on there..
