8 month old son

8 month old son

My son is eight months old. He is showing some signs of being delayed. He does not sit up by himself. He has to sit in a bumbo or be propped up against something to help him sit. He does not hold his bottle or have good had control. He is a very happy baby. He babbles and smiles and coos. He knows his parents and brothers. He loves attention and being held and loved on. He does not have any problems eating. He actually weighs 21lbs. Early intervention has accepted him into the program, however he has not yet had his first session of therapy. He also has crossed eyes.  We have been to the eye doctor once and the doctor says that his eyes are great. We go back at the end of this month, however they still cross. We will also have gentic testing done after Christmas. If you have any information that you can share. I am open for advice. Praying that therapy will help our baby boy!

I think that it will be helpful once you start working with the early intervention team.  They'll start evaluations to track what the problem is.  He may have some motor planning difficulty but it is so hard to say at such an early stage.  Some kids develop the things you mention behind and have no delay at all.  Some are late in their motor developmental milestones but become very verbal instead.  So I think it is awesome that you've started early intervention to work on any issues he may have and give him the best possible chance of overcoming them.

My son does have a developmental delay that was spotted at 3.  In retrospect, there were signs but as he was my first born, I didn't catch them.  He was actually an early walker.  I thought that was great but come to find out if a child skips the crawling stage, this is also a sign of a delay.  My son  has sensory integration disorder which is a delay of the nervous system.  Here is the good news----------- my son is now almost 7 an doing wonderful.  He really is.  Early intervention even started at 3.5 and 4 has made the hugest difference.

So work with your team.  Do whatever they tell you and expect that you'll be working on it a lot on you own.  They'll show you exercises to do for example and then you do them several times during the day when they aren't with you.

Hang in there.  I'm sure you are scared.  But from my family to yours, it is amazing what they can do to help our children these days.  good luck
