Abnormal EEG

Abnormal EEG

My 11 yo son has several dx.  PDD-NOS, XYY syndrome, kidney disorder, and epilepsy - of some kind.

Epilepsy is the one I am the least knowledgeable.  In my experience so far, neuros just don't explain much and don't tend to answer any questions.

My son had suspected seizure activity starting one year ago.  He was able to tell me that sometimes he feels scared and then shakes.  He had one incidence of a possible visual hallucination.

His only eeg was done almost exactly a year ago.  It states dominant occipital rhythm is 8.5-9.5 hz and mixed with fused slower activity.  Scattered 5-7 hz activity and low voltage 18-22hz activity present in anterior leads.  Random spike transients in the left central region.

No change with hyperventilation.  Increase in frequency of spike activity during sleep.  No abnormalities during photic stimulation.

Results said abnormal eeg.  Reveals a focus of spike activity in the left central region.  A finding indication the precense of a focal epileptiform process in this region.  Background activity is within the range of normal variation.

One neuro said that the eeg is perfectly normal.  Discounted the reading of the report by his colleague.  Stated all presumed and observed seizure activity was purely autistic behavior.

Next neuro said no way, definitely seizure disorder.  Son has been on Trileptal since last November.  Seems to have poor seizure management.  Just had 4 seizures 2 days ago.  Observed by nurse.  Prolonged postictal period.  Slept for 5 hours afterwards.

Son is on 1200mg Trileptal.  Also taking .75mg Risperdal.

How come 2 different drs state totally opposite things.  Also, what type of epilespy is this??  What lobe of the brain is the left central region??

Thanks!

You need to go to a University Hospital like IU Medical Center to get a better opinion.  I had a grand mal seizure 11 years ago my senior year of high school while I was driving out of the school parking lot, and I hit two other cars.  My EEG's have always been strange because one doc will say it is normal and another will say there are abnormaltys.  Have you gotten your son a sleep deprived EEG yet?
Be careful how you handle this though, because if it is discovered he doesn't have much to worry about, all this could still cause him not to be able to drive a car when he is older.
I had that one seizure, and it almost killed me because they were doing CPR on me, but I have yet to have another.  We think mine was because my body was stressed out from a surgery I had a month before.
