Children's nails flaky?

Does anyone know what cases children's nails to be flaky towards the finger tip? By flaky I mean, where you can peel thin strips of nail off and see where there is a break in the smooth nail. Both my children, daughter 7 and son 1, have this. I am just curious if it could be caused by something that I should be concerned with.

I have a history of autoimmune disease in my family and suffer from Hashimoto's thyroiditis. I don't know if thyroid could cause something like this.

Any ideas?

I found this link.  I think you can eliminate the fake nails thing,  but maybe lack of protein or dry climate?
