Fevers , now leg pain

Fevers , now leg pain

My son who has had fevers most of last year on and off.High fevers. He had another episode this week and blood tests were done. His wbc was 2.2. Normal range is 6-1500. 2 days later it was 4.0. The dr is waiting a couple of weeks to see if it will go up. while he had his high fever he complained that his one leg was sore and I had to rub it for him.I thought is was just from the fever. Now today a day after the second blood test he woke up crying of leg pain. The same leg.should I be concerned that the wbc is trying to tell us something or am I reading into things. Please help me.He was in and out of hospital twice in 6 months cause of the high fevers. He also saw a lot of different specialists. He does have a heart condition so the drs know that they cannot take any chances with him.Any advice would be helpful.

sorry to hear about the new symptom. I know all about not getting answers and how frustrating it can be. The pain is probably from a new infection, maybe, since his wbc count is low, not fighting infections. Has he been taken to see a hematologist?

If you are not happy with the way things are going, the wait and see approach, go for a second opinion. Just because that is what this doctor wants to do, doesn't mean he gets the final say. For a medical problem I had, I went to several specialist before sticking with the one I really liked. good luck.

The thing is nobody really takes me seriously because Broc does not look sick.Like some kids do.But I know that he is sick on the inside. How do you describe that to a dr.I just feel that it is more than a virus. They told me last year 8-10 viruses in a year.Well he had 8 in 5 months. That is what they called his fever episodes and now they are blaming it on the EBV that he was diagnosed with and said that it re-activated.Do you know of anyone that this has happened to?

Just because a child doesn't look sick, doesn't mean they aren't sick. I got that a lot with my medical condition. Teachers and the school nurse used to say I was faking it. Though my surgeon and others knew the truth. I would keep taking him to different specialists to find one who can help. It can get old fast, but it's worth it for his health. You just have to go and describe the symptoms. In that time span it's normal to have around 3 or maybe 4 viruses, but having 8 is too high.

Thanks that is what my husband and I thought. We have a dr that we saw last year amongst many others and he is a heamotologist. My husband thinks maybe we should give him a call and let him know what happened.I dont want to be a hypocondriac mother but I also dont want my son to suffer in any way.I really do appreciate your concern. Thanks I will let you know if we here anything.

Still not heard anything from any of the specialists. But I did notice brown patchy spots on Brocs scalp. They have been there for a while.I thought it was sand from playing but it never came out with washing his hair.I called his dr back today and he thinks he has psoriasis. He is going to confirm it on Friday and he will do another cbc for him too.It just never ends here.

So I heard from one hematologist and he seems to think he is fine and fed me the virus thing again.the ID Dr is going to consult with a few others at Riley Hospital and will let me know tom.I am eager to hear what he has to say.

I got Brocs labs in the mail today and this is what it said.

Hgb 11.0     11.5-14.5
Hct  32.6     33-43%
WBC 2.2     4.0-14.5
RBC  4.25    4.00-5.30
Platelet 141    150-450
RBC morphology  - abnormal
nuet  18.1%     25.0-62.0%
lymph 66.5%    38.0-48.0%
Monoc 13.3    0.0-11.0

Does this look normal to anyone or am I over-reacting.Please help me.

Sometimes the reason for a low wbc count can be found in the spleen or liver, problems with those organs. I'd ask about the spleen, since the lymph function is high. Though viral infections do disrupt bone marrow function, which would be the reason for having low wbc.

I wouldn't worry much about the brown spots, those shouldn't be much of a concern.

good luck.

Thanks.I spoke to ID dr and he said to do another cbc tom so that is what we are doing. They said if the fevers continue regularly then we might be looking at cyclic neutropenia. He said that his neutrophils are only working at 20% which would make it very easy for him to get infections so we have to take precautions. If it is cyclic nuetropenia then we have to see a hematologist and find out the reason for this.
Thanks again for all your support.

We got todays cbc back and his wbc is up to 6.7. His nuetrophils are at 30%.His ANC is well above 1000.That is the number that the drs are concerned about. His last 2 numbers were 426 and 726.Today is it 2000. Now we wait until he spikes another fever.I am so happy that even though the ID dr is helping us and his problems are not infectious I really appreciate the ID explaining everything to me and helping me understand how to better help Broc.I truly believe that you have to keep looking for that one dr even if its not in his field. There are drs out there that are willing to help us.The ID said that he would speak to hematology in advance and let them know about Broc so that in case we needed to see them , then they would be up to date with his case.
