HELP! 2 year old's finger nails and toenails coming off!

My 2 year old's finger nails and toe nails are peeling off at from the cuticle.  So far it is only on his pointer fingers and his second toe on his right foot.  His big toe on his left foot is starting.  That is it so far but I expect more will start too.  I took him to the dr and she had no idea what it is from.  She told me to keep an eye on it and if more nails start then bring him back.  She stated that I could go ahead and make an appt with a dermatologist so if he gets worse, I will already have it set.  If anyone has any idea what this could be or what could be causing it, I would appreciate your input!  The doctor never even mentioned a vitamin deficiency!  So, any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

They do believe there is a correlation with Hand Foot and mouth disease, has your child been sick recently with other symptoms maybe a few weeks before the nails started coming off?

no, he has not had anything other than a slight cold.  He has never had Hand Foot and Mouth.  When I did a search on the internet it also came up with Hand Foot and Mouth but he has never had it.  The dr has no idea what it could be.
