My 3 year old son holds his bowel movements during potty training, should I proceed with the training?

by braxtonsmom06, May 21, 2009 01:32AM
My son just turned 3 years old, and we started potty training recently. I didn't bother with pull ups or training pants, went directly into "big boy" underwear. He's doing VERY well with peeing in the potty. And he learned to stand up to pee, he wanted to be like Daddy.  He's had a few accidents while he was playing but hasn't wet the bed during the night...YET!  He will not poo in the potty, absolutely refuses it. He is very regular with his bowel movements, and usually goes twice a day (in a diaper that is). A few days ago he held it all day and "squatted" in the floor (while still wearing his underwear) and pooed beside his potty chair. I have tried everything that I can think of to get him to poo in his potty...rewards, treats, toys, etc. Nothing works! He will make excuses for himself, like he "will in a minute" or "when daddy gets home", "i have a headache" he's used every excuse in the book. I've tried getting him to go potty with Daddy, that didn't work. He's even asked for a diaper so he can poo and has cried because his belly hurts, but I am  headstrong in getting him trained and I refused the diaper.  I'm just concerned about him holding his poo, he's not went in 2 days, and that's a long time for my child. What should I do? Should I try giving him something that will make him GO? Please help, don't know which way to turn next!!!

I have great news!! He finally had a bowel movement, and used the "big potty" while doing so!! I'm so proud of him, he is proud of himself also. He had to call the entire family to let them know that he pooped in the potty. So everyone that is going through this, just backoff of your child, and it is VERY true that they will go when they are ready. Don't force them to sit on the potty, and if they have an accident on themselves don't scold them for it. Just say, "You are a big boy now, this needs to be in the potty, not in your undies"! That's all I said to him, and he came running to me and told me he had to poop, and I tried sitting him on "his potty" and he didn't want to use that one, he wanted to use the "big potty"....took him to the bathroom, sat him on the big potty with a ring, grabbed a book that my mom had purchased for me, sat in the floor beside him and started reading. I read it about 3 times (it's a short book) and he was finally doing it!! The book is wonderful!!! It's a hard back book, with hard pages and it's called "Let's Go Potty!" by Giggle and Grow company. It has real life pictures and a complete walk through of a toddler learning to use the potty, also it has a button on the book that you can press and it sounds like a toilet flushing and a child giggling. It was purchased at Wal-Mart for $7.97.  Good luck Mom's, hope something I've said helps out!
