Nipple pain for my 8 yr old boy

My 8 yr old son complained that he has pain in both the nipple when he was swimming yesterday. He says it was painful when the swim shirt rubbed his nipples. It was not swollen or lumpy. This morning he still says his left nipple pains to touch and his right nipple is alright. What is the cause for this?
