Please help, my 10 month old has "infected" front tooth

I would really like anyone feedback on this.  My 10 month old started running a fever 2 days ago and I noticed his front gums were a little reddish and purple.  This morning he woke up with a very swollen upper lip and refuses his bottle, for obvious reasons.  I checked his gums and his front, upper tooth is surrounded by what looks like infection to me.  It is also on the gums right beside that tooth.  His pediatrician couldn't see him today, our children's dentist wouldn't see him today, so I finally got him into my dentist.  They were nice enough to look him over but said it was probably just his teeth trying to push the rest of the way in.  Is this normal?  I have three other children and have never experienced this with any of them.  His little mouth looks so painful and awful.  The dentist told me to just get some baby anbesol to put on it.  He is running a fever even though he has been on antibiotics for a week and a half for ear infection!  I'm so aggrivated right now and would love some advice.  I just don't want anything to happen to his little teeth and especially don't want him suffering needlessly!  Help!
