Should a 5th metacarpal fracture have a cast?

my 9 year old son fell off his bike on Saturday and fractured his 5th metercarpal. He was put in a temporary half cast and we were back at the fracture clinic this morning. They took off the cast and strapped his little finger to the next one. It is obviously very swollen and sore and I am worried he is going to knock it and damage it. Is it usual to not put a cast on this fracture?

That's a hard one. Maybe yes, and maybe no. It depends on the x-ray. You might ask a second opinion from a different physician who has read the films.
