Skin Rash - Would like feedback

My son developed a pretty intense rash earlier this year, I believe in January. Took him to doctor and they said it was eczema likely from the cold dry air, and possibly a detergent or something else irritating it. Gave us some kind of oily steroid like gel, which barely helped.
Went on vacation, seemed to have gotten better a bit. Couple weeks after returning the rash came back to how it was.
Back to the doc, and it was diagnosed as the Christmas tree rash (pityriasis rosea). Said it's not harmful and it'll eventually pass and should be gone within like 8 weeks or something. (these details are a bit hazy since it was earlier this year)

Fast forward through summer up to now. His rash is gone, but he is left with scaly skin where the rash was, and he still itches some parts of his body. It doesn't get red and inflamed like it used to, just scaly / bumpy feeling.

Some patches like his arm left a lighter skin tone, perhaps it's a temporary scar?

So my question... the scaly skin- is this normal after pityriasis rosea? Could he have been mis-diagnosed all along?
Since he still itches I'm convinced the problem is not 100% gone, and I do not want it to return with a vengeance this winter when it gets real dry/cold.

A little about him- he's a picky eater so he pretty much eats like crap... something we're trying to work on. We give him Flinstone vitamins and 500mg vitamin c daily (if we remember). He gets enough sleep, and no other known health conditions, aside from possible ADHD. No known allergies.

He has his 7yr checkup in about a week, but I'd like to go to his pediatrician armed with good questions. Any feedback appreciated.

It could be a rich nourishing cream may help his skin, maybe the local Pharmacist would have some ideas..we always found vaseline good on dry skin especially in winter , go for a thick cream rather than lotion, I have even heard apple cider vinegar helps with itchy skin .

Yea I've tried reading around but most of the info just says it lasts up to 12 weeks. It's been much more.

I took a closer look at his arms last night. There is no noticeable rash or anything, but when you rub your fingers across parts of his skin, it feels dry and scaly. No redness, and he occasionally itches.

I don't know what to make of this, but I do have a feeling once winter it's it'll come back strong. That's my fear anyway... =\

I have found a link maybe useful to you    www.hopkinsmedicine.org>HealthLibrary    The scaly skin is part of pityriasis and from what I have read should also disappear..it maybe a good idea to ask the Doctor. Make sure he is eating healthy foods, if you buy them he will eat them ..perhaps let him coming shopping he can choose his own .set a rule that it has to be healthy  but with some treats .the Vits sound good You could ask him what to put on the marks and itchy areas.
