Small white spots on inside of son's lips

My 8 year old son has been complaining about his lips hurting for the last 2 days, so I put some oragel on them to see if that helped and it did briefly, but he still kept complaining about the pain, and I didn't notice anything strange about his lips until today, he has very small white splotchy looking spots on the inside of both the top and bottom lips, not visible from the outside. There are no spots on the gums, and he says he's been feeling fine other than that. Do you have any idea what this may be? It's making him pretty miserable, but if it's something that will clear up on its own, I hate to go to the doc for just a prescription for childrens tylenol. Thank you so much.

Yeast infection, contaigious & requires meds to heal.  That's what this sounds like to me.  I would get it checked out.  Hate taking children to the Dr. Hate more to leave without meds, always a 50% chance, glad to here I am not the only mom weighing the odds.  Good Luck
