Sonsstomach problem

Sonsstomach problem

My son has had stomach problems for a couple of years now.
He had a biopsy and found that he was allergic to wheat and improved for 7 months.
Now the problems have returned and he says he feels full on an empty stomach in the morning and can roll around the floor in pain to the point we think he needs an ambulance.
He is on omeprazole but i am at my wits end.He is losing weight and doctors are now not sure. Awaiting blood tests for dairy allergy  and oats to see if he has and allergy to this and going to starta new medicine in a few days.

Hi Charley,

Was he diagnosed with Celiac Disease? If biopsy showed an allergy to wheat, is he on a gluten free diet, or have you only removed wheat? Gluten is in a TON of stuff that may or may not be on the packaging. Celiac disease is something that will not be outgrown. It is a lifelong disease. It is entirely possible that he is getting glutenized from something inconspicuous. Does he see a dietician or nutritionist to help you manage the "allergy"? They can be very helpful. My daughter is on a gluten free diet and it is a lot of work, but there are a number of great resources out there.

I'm curious, why is he on omeprazole? Does he have acid reflux? Some proton pump inhibitors can have side effects that actually mimic the reflux, such as appetite suppression and nausea. Was he biopsied through a colonoscopy or an endoscopy? Does he see a pediatric gastroenterologist?

I would be very worried about the doctors being unsure as to what is going on, particularly in a case of severe pain and weight loss, with a diagnosis of wheat allergy. It's important to note as well, that many people with Celiac Disease are also lactose intolerant.

You need a really good pediatric gastroenterolist and dietician on board, because this can only be managed through diet. There is no cure for Celiac Disease. Good luck, and if you have any further questions, I would be happy to help. (((HUGS)))

Also, I would be a bit leery about diagnosing allergies through bloodwork in a young child. They are notoriously inaccurate. A skin ***** test would be better. You run the risk of false positives in a child who already should be on a very limited diet. True milk allergy is very rare, so it's likely that he is dealing with an intolerance. Even if the bloodwork is negative. A lot of people with Celiac disease also avoid oats as part of the gluten free diet, so in my mind, his allergist is running unnecessary tests.
