Weight Issue

According to the BMI charts, my son is labled Obese. He is 7.5 yrs old, is right around 3'12 and is 70.5 lbs.
His last check up he was 78 lbs and as of 3 weeks ago was 76 lbs. He has lost weight. I have him in Karate and we also go walk everyday now, well I walk and he rides his bike. They say that a healthy weight for him is between 43 ans 50 lbs. That seems very scrawny to me for his frame. He has been stocky (Solid) since birth.
Can anyone, pref. a nutrionist or doctor, give me any advice on a good weight for him?

Thanks

Have you got him eating good healthy meals, How about your weight and his Dads its more difficult if the rest of the Family is overwieght ,how about a Healthy Family eating Plan, and even if you are not overweight we could all get fitter.Dont get any food in the house that isnt healthy, stock up on Veg and Fruit and protein, Let him have a treat sometimes.Make sure he is never hungry by getting him into the Habit of snacking but on Carrots and things that will help him with his weight, as he gets slimmer his self Esteem will go up aswell.Keep going with the exercise and thats for you aswell.

Hi, Thanks for the comment. Yes his dad and I are both over weight. My husband suffered a heart attack in April and that was our wake up call. Since then we have been eating very well. Hardly beef at all. Mostly chicken and turkey and nothing fried. Lots of veggies and fruit.  We walk 2 miles everyday and he is in Karate.

He has lost about 8 pounds since april and his dad and I are loosing too. But I wanted to know a healthy weight for him. The charts say 42 to 55 lbs. To me that seems too scrawny for his build.

Good for you thats the way to go, that weight seems okay to me , you are just used to him being bigger. and it sounds so much less, ask your Doc though if in doubt.

Hi, my son is also 7.5 years old and ways 70 pounds but he is 4'6 feet tall.  Every kid is different but according to the charts my son's weight is on the higher end of normal too but he is thin.  My other son, on the other hand, is 6 years old.  He is 4'1 feet tall and 71 pounds.  He eats healthy and in small amounts and gets plenty of excersize.  We have been to every doctor known to find a cause for his weight increase and have come up empty.  What we have done is change his milk from whole to 1%.  I changed the ice cream to low fat or sugar free.  He is only aloud juice once a day and milk 2 times a day, otherwise it is water.  Most dessert type or snack type foods are the 100 calorie pack versions they have out.  He has now maintained his weight for 6 months so that is an improvement.  Like I said, he does not over eat but I made changes to what he eats and have seen improvement.

I made the same changes. I only give him Fat Free milk in cereal and once a week treat to Ovaltine. No fruit juices. I buy the powdered individual sugar free packets for the water bottles and he also likes water and drinks plenty of it.

I do not fry food, I grill and bake and use pam or an Olive Oil spray. We only have beef once a month and eat mostly chicken, veal or turkey. We are not fish eaters. I do have a hard time feeding him veggies but he is getting better at that. He likes fruit so I buy that, and I usually buy the Bryes Carb smart ice cream once a month.

He eats well so I guess I shouldn't be too overly concerned right now.

Thanks for the post!
