help! is this normal???

by BethanyP, Dec 15, 2007 08:14PM
My son is 11 months old and has not gained any weight in three months, he actually lost a couple ounces. He weighs 16 pounds 0 ounces. I have seen two doctors and they both seem to think this is normal. Is this normal??? He eats like a pig, I don't get it. I am losing sleep over this. I need more opinions on this. Am I overreacting??

I have a ten year old and a 13 month old, I went through that with both of my girls, the first when she was about a year old, and my baby has only gained one pound in about five months.  They both can eat too.  both of them get taller and thinner, then start to pack on some fat after a little while.  It's no big deal.  I think you have nothing to worry about.  Calm down, and enjoy this time, it goes so fast.  If you stress over things too much, it goes even faster.

My son has the same problem -  he was almost 22 pounds at 6 months and then in a month, he has lost almost a pound and two weeks later he lost another 3 ounces. He eats about 24 oz formula and 4 meals of fruits/veggies & rice daily. The dr says this is normal because he is more active now - rolling and beginning to crawl. I guess the biggest concern would be if he is not meeting the developmental guidelines (such as not crawling - holding up his head, rolling etc. My sister is a NICU nurse and a mother of premature twins and another child and she told me that it is normal for them to lose weight - as long as they are developing. Hope that helps!

Thank you for responding.  I have a two year old as well as my 11 month old, my 11 month old is behind in motor skills when compared to his brother.  Both my kids were 4-5 weeks early. They both left the hospital healthy with a normal discharge. However  my 11 month old does not get into the sitting position on his own and shows no interest in it. If I put him in the sitting position he will sit there for a few minutes then roll over to his belly. He did pull himself up for the first time today and he does do the army crawl very well. I don't understand why he isn't getting into the sitting position, most kids at this age have already been doing this for months now (I think). My doctor said he looks and acts like an 8 month old. Should I be concerned about this??  I really appreciate your responses.

I know this may not help because my son is 7 1/2 months - but he does the same thing. Every time I put him in the sitting position (even with toys in front of him) he sits for a whole 10 seconds and then flops to his belly. I just figured he does not like it and I noticed  he flops over more after he just ate - thinking maybe his belly is full and its not comfortable. My girlfriends daughter is 7 weeks older than my son and she hates sitting - she will cry every time!
