mono in a 4 yr old

My grandaughter was just diagnosed with mono.  She is 4 yrs old and goes to day care.  She has been ill with cold symptoms and off and on fever for about 6 wks.  She has been to the pediatrician sometimes twice a week.  Today her temp went to 102 and day care had us pick her up.  Mu daughter took her to an urgent care where they took xrays, which show a possible pneumonia and blood work. All of her labs were ok but the mono spot which showed "acute mono" per the md.  She has no spleen involvement at this time per the doctor.  I've been a nurse for 30 yrs and I have worked in an ER for about 20...I have never seen a positive mono in a 4 yr old!  Is this a common disease ... or is it just not diagnosed....the parent thinking the child just has a virus?  Is there any thing we have to watch for?  By the way she has never during this whole 6 weeks had a sore throat!  Thanks

I am wondering how this turned out as I am going through the exact same thing with my 4 year old daughter right now!  Thank you.

it could be misdiagnosed, though mono isn't all that uncommon. it's a bit more rare in such a young child, but it's happened before. Watch her temperature and make sure that's under control. many times for mono, they will prescribe a steroid treatment, so you can ask about that to the doctor if you want.
