rash near mouth of 17 month

I have had a coldsore this past week and have tried my best to avoid kissing my children or sharing anything with them. Yesterday my 17month who is very oral develop what looks like a small scaly patch near the corner of his mouth. I had a hard time trying to keep him still to inspect it.
I would hate to pass HSV to my children. I've tried looking online for answers about the patch but no answers. What is this patch?
Another question is can you pass it to them when you change their diapers?
