toilet issues

My son is 3.5 years old and  has been trained to go #1 since he turned 3.  Most mornings he wakes up dry and asks to go to the toilet.  I wish it was like that with bowel movement.  He is scared to go to the toilet and he will not go.  I have tried so many things, he loves the idea of going to school and play with friends, and that is the main incentive of the moment.  He is able to hold it for days, I can see he has the urge but somehow he manages to hold it.  I get him to sit in the potty but he is crying and telling me he does not want to go otr that is going to hurt.  He has never had a constipation problem in the past.  He had hold it for 3 days (with pull ups goes everyday) so final;ly I offered a pull up as soon as he put them on, he went in his little corner and went to the bathroom.  I just don't know what else to do
