Stinging Pain

I suffer from peripheral neuropathy, normally with little pain, but recently have experienced severe stinging pain at the back of my ankle and tenderness up into my calf muscle. It is much worse at night and keeps me awake. Coldness to the affected area helps but only for a few moments. When I eventually get to sleep and wake the next morning the stinging has gone but the tenderness remains. Any ideas please? Thank you.
